The renovation series: bathroom renovation ideas & inspiration

Jan 29, 2025

Bathroom renovations are an exciting opportunity to breathe new life into one of the most essential spaces in your home. Whether you’re looking to create a tranquil retreat, a bold design statement, or a balance of form and function, there’s no shortage of inspiration to guide your vision.

Below, we explore some bathroom renovation ideas from our portfolio of projects, including themes like:

  • Coastal aesthetics

  • Luxurious stone finishes

  • Mixed materials

  • Bold colours & patterns.

#1: Coastal aesthetics

For those who love the calming influence of coastal design, incorporating natural elements and light, breezy tones is key. Our Foreshore Drive Waterfront project is a perfect example of how to achieve this aesthetic. Here, a neutral palette of white and striking aqua-blue floor-to-ceiling tiling creates a serene and grounded space.

Key ideas for a coastal bathroom renovation:

  • Soft, neutral colours: Opt for whites, beiges, and light greys to emulate the natural hues of the coast.

  • Ocean-inspired accents: To incorporate the ocean into your design, use blue or aqua tiles as a feature or in a mosaic pattern. For example, we opted for stacked vertical tiles in aqua with white grouting for a geometric touch.

  • Natural light: Maximise light with large windows or skylights, ensuring privacy with frosted glass or sheer curtains.

#2: A study in stone

Stone is a perennial favourite in bathroom design due to its elegance and durability. Whether it’s marble, travertine, or granite, stone can elevate a bathroom’s aesthetic and functionality. Many of our projects, like the Bowline Circuit project pictured above, showcase how stone can be used to stunning effect.

Key ideas for a stone-themed bathroom renovation:

  • Statement vanities: A stone countertop paired with a minimalist basin creates a sophisticated focal point. At Bowline Circuit, for example, we added a stone countertop and vessel basin to a floating timber cabinet (pictured above).

  • Floor-to-ceiling tiles: Stone tiles create a seamless, luxurious feel that adds depth and texture. In contrast to the muted marble walls of the Bowline Circuit bathroom, we added dark floor-to-ceiling brickwork in the shower to add depth and create a sophisticated focal point for the space.

  • Underfloor heating: Pair stone flooring with underfloor heating to combine luxury with comfort (especially in winter).

#3: Mixed materials for an industrial feel

Mixing materials in your bathroom design can add a layer of visual intrigue and allow for greater customisation. Our Rush Bush House project illustrates how combining contrasting finishes can create a harmonious and contemporary space.

Key ideas for a mixed-material bathroom:

  • Wood and stone: Pair natural wood finishes with matte stone surfaces for a balance of warmth and sophistication.

  • Matte and gloss: Combine matte black fixtures with glossy white tiles for a striking modern look

  • Industrial accents: Incorporate concrete or metal finishes for an urban edge. In the Rush Bush House project, we utilised large, matte grey tiles and matte black fixtures to make the timber accents pop.

#4: Make a statement with bold colours & patterns

Patterned walls and bold colours are an excellent way to inject personality and drama into your bathroom. Projects like our Federation Home Renovation and Soldiers Point Waterfront Interior Renovation highlight the transformative power of eye-catching designs.

Key ideas for a bold bathroom design:

  • Patterned tiles: Opt for intricate designs like Moroccan or geometric patterns to create a striking focal point. Alternatively, waterproof wallpaper with a bold print is a cost-effective way to introduce drama

  • Bright colours: A splash of vibrant colour on even one wall can energise the space. In the Soldiers Point Waterfront Renovation, we mixed white, silver, and several shades of pink

  • Natural motifs: Incorporate botanical prints or stone-inspired textures for an organic feel.

Practical tips for planning a bathroom renovation

While inspiration and brilliant bathroom renovation ideas are essential, planning ensures the success of your project. Start by defining your priorities; consider whether your main focus is aesthetics, functionality, or achieving a balance. Clarifying your goals early on will help guide your decision-making throughout the process.

Layout

Placing fixtures and fittings should maximise space and ensure a natural flow. A well-planned layout enhances the bathroom's usability and creates a sense of openness and comfort.

Lighting

Lighting plays a significant role in setting the mood and functionality of the bathroom. Combining ambient, task, and accent lighting allows you to create a versatile space that adapts to different needs. For instance, bright task lighting is essential for grooming, while softer ambient lighting can create a relaxing atmosphere for a soak in the tub.

Materials

Investing in quality materials is crucial. Durable finishes and fixtures that stand the test of time will ensure your renovation remains functional and beautiful for years to come. This might mean choosing high-quality tiles, robust cabinetry, or premium hardware that can withstand daily use.

Storage

Storage solutions are another key consideration. Clever ideas like recessed shelves, floating vanities, and custom cabinetry help keep your bathroom organised and clutter-free, making the space more enjoyable.
